Amazon.co.uk Review
Islamic countries are as different to the west as anywhere in the world, and it is perhaps for this reason that, to western eyes, they have always seemed enigmatic. The
Discover The Orient CD-ROM provides an introduction to what is often seen as an opaque part of the world.
Filled with haunting images of the deserts of Arabia, the nomads that live in them and of the beautiful architecture which fills many of the mosques of the region, this is a good starting point for those wanting to find out more about the area that gave birth to Islam and had a worthwhile, if basic, introduction to Islam and its tenets, as well as some unique illustrations of Islamic art. There is also a run-through of the history of the Crusades and the Ottoman Empire and a guide to "the land of the 1001 nights". The current conflicts between West and East are not really addressed, though, which is an understandable if somewhat disappointing omission.
Perhaps the best section is that dealing with the nomadic desert peoples and their history, and the haunting, accompanying music. This, together with the many beautiful images, means that the package is worthwhile in demystifying a part of the world which we are often led to believe is more foreign and frightening than is really the case. --Toby Green
